Help, but on your terms.

We don't have your data, so we can't see your problem. We can only help in general terms — these answers cover the questions we get most. For anything specific, write to us.

Getting Started

The setup decisions that matter most for a private vault.

Set a passcode first

Camora generates an encryption key on first launch. Setting a passcode wraps that key so it can't be unwrapped without you. Skip this step and a future device migration may strand your vault.

Capture into the vault, not the camera roll

Camora's camera writes encrypted directly into your vault. Photos never enter Apple's Photos library unless you explicitly export them.

Enable Face ID after the first unlock

Face ID unlocks the vault but only after your passcode has unwrapped the master key once. This is intentional — biometrics alone cannot unwrap a passcode-protected key.

Frequently Asked

Where is my data stored?

On your device, in Camora's app sandbox, encrypted with AES-256-GCM. Nothing is uploaded. There is no Camora server holding your data.

What happens if I forget my passcode?

Your vault becomes unrecoverable. We cannot reset it, restore it, or recover the master key. This is the cost of zero-knowledge encryption — we don't have a backdoor, even for ourselves.

What is duress mode?

A Pro feature: a second passcode that opens an empty decoy vault while leaving your real vault sealed. The decoy and real vaults are cryptographically separated — neither can decrypt the other. Designed for situations where you may be compelled to unlock your phone.

Does Camora work without internet?

Yes, except for billing. The vault, camera, document scanner, and notes all work fully offline. The only network calls happen when StoreKit verifies your purchase or when you initiate a local-network sync between your iPhone and Mac.

How do I move my vault to a new device?

Use Vault Backup (Pro). Export an encrypted .camoravault file, transfer it to your new device, and import it with the same passcode. The backup is also AES-GCM sealed, so it's safe to store on any cloud service or USB drive.

How does sync between iPhone and Mac work?

Camora's macOS companion pairs over your local network using TLS 1.3 with a fingerprint exchange. No cloud relay, no Camora server. Pairing requires both devices on the same Wi-Fi and a one-time confirmation code on each side.

How do refunds work?

All payments go through Apple. Use Apple's standard refund flow at reportaproblem.apple.com — Camora has no payment infrastructure of its own.

What does Pro unlock?

Unlimited vault items (free tier caps at 100), duress mode, vault backup/restore, and the macOS companion app.

Diagnostics

Troubleshooting

The most common failure modes and what they mean.

Camora won't unlock with my passcode

After 5 wrong attempts the lockout kicks in (30s, doubling each round, capped at 5 minutes). Wait it out. If your passcode genuinely no longer works after a device restore, it's because the vault key is device-only and didn't migrate — the vault is unrecoverable.

Face ID stopped working

iOS revokes biometric access after a forced restart, multiple Face ID failures, or 48 hours since last unlock. Re-enter your passcode once and Face ID will work again.

I can't see my vault contents on my Mac

Sync requires both devices unlocked and on the same Wi-Fi network. Carrier-grade NAT and certain VPN configurations block local discovery. Try toggling Wi-Fi off and back on, or pair fresh from Settings → Devices.

Restore Purchases doesn't bring back Pro

Restore is per Apple ID. Make sure you're signed into the App Store with the same Apple ID that originally made the purchase. If the issue persists, try Apple Settings → Apple ID → Media & Purchases → Restore Purchases first, then re-open Camora.
